Pawleys Island at a glance

Pawleys Island is a small incorporated town in Georgetown County on a barrier island less than four miles long and mostly one house wide, reached by two short causeways across the salt marsh. Rice-planter families began summering here in the early 1700s, and the Pawleys Island Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1972, keeps summer houses dating from about 1780. The town incorporated in 1985 and passed an ordinance forbidding commercial establishments. Its own comprehensive plan separates the town from the unincorporated Pawleys Island community on the mainland, which makes up much of what a Pawleys Island home search returns. Compare both, then check each address for town limits, schools, flood designation and property records.
