City history ↗Georgetown at a glance
Georgetown is the county seat of Georgetown County and, by the City's account, the third-oldest city in South Carolina, founded in 1729 and made an official port of entry in 1732. Its waterfront connects the city to the Intracoastal Waterway and, through Winyah Bay, to the Atlantic. The Georgetown Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1971, includes the Rice Museum in the Old Market Building and Prince George Winyah Church; the nearby Joseph H. Rainey House is a National Historic Landmark. The Harborwalk runs four blocks along the Sampit River behind Front Street, where the Wooden Boat Show is held each October. Compare homes inside and outside city limits, then check each address for utilities, schools, flood designation and property records.
