Welcome to the fascinating history of Litchfield Beach! Located on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, this coastal area is a popular destination for tourists looking to explore the gorgeous white-sand beaches and experience the charming culture of the area. From its Native American origins to its modern-day development, Litchfield Beach has seen its fair share of history over the years. Let’s take a closer look at the history of Litchfield Beach and learn how it’s become such an iconic destination.

Native American Presence at Litchfield Beach

What was Litchfield Beach like in its earliest days? For centuries, the area was home to various indigenous peoples, including the Waccamaw, Winyah, and Catawba Indian tribes. These tribes hunted and fished here, trading goods with each other and settlers who eventually arrived in the region. Evidence of Native American activity in the area remains today, including artifacts, remnants of hunting trails, and shell midden along the beach.

Explorers & Settlers Arrive

In the 1500s, Spanish Explorers began arriving in Litchfield Beach, looking for gold and other riches. While they never found any gold in this region, they did establish a settlement at nearby Georgetown in 1526. It wasn’t until 1670 that English settlers began to arrive, claiming the territory for their own. Over the next few decades, more settlers moved into the area and established plantations along what is now known as Winyah Bay.

The Formation of Pawleys Island & Litchfield Beach

In 1750, a wealthy planter named Eliza Pawley purchased 2,000 acres of land nearby Pawleys Island. This purchase would become important in establishing this region as a popular destination for travelers. By 1789, additional land purchases were made by members of the Tucker family, who established plantations on both sides of what is now known as Litchfield Beach.

As the plantation economy grew in the early 19th century, so did Litchfield Beach. The town began to attract more and more businesses, as well as a new wave of settlers. The population of this small fishing village slowly increased as it became more of an attractive destination for those looking for a place to settle down.

The Construction of Railroad Railroad & Bridges At Litchfield

By the 1800s, railroads were being built throughout South Carolina. This meant that goods could easily be transported throughout the entire state, making it easier for people to travel between cities. In 1891, two bridges were constructed over Winyah Bay, connecting Georgetown to Myrtle Beach & Surfside Beach. This helped open access to new markets and resources for people living in and around Litchfield Beach.

Development of Tourism & Recreation

By the 1900s, tourism had become a major industry throughout South Carolina’s Coastal Regions. People from all around the world would come to visit and explore this picturesque area. One such tourist was John F Kennedy, who vacationed with his family nearby Pawley’s Island in 1963. In 1934, a bridge connecting Murrells Inlet to Litchfield Beach was constructed, allowing easier access to people visiting from out of town. This same bridge still stands today and is used by thousands of tourists each year looking to explore this beautiful area.

The Formation of Brookgreen Gardens

In 1931, Archer Huntington and his wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington, founded Brookgreen Gardens outside Murrells Inlet, located near Litchfield Beach. This garden is now home to an impressive collection of sculptures, plants, and wildlife visitors can enjoy year-round.

The Huntingtons had a vision for Brookgreen Gardens and worked tirelessly to bring it to life. They wanted to create a place where people could come and enjoy the beauty of nature while also experiencing the art of sculpture. They also wanted to create a sanctuary for native plants and animals, so they set out to create a botanical garden home to all sorts of different species.

The Huntingtons worked with some of the best sculptors of the time to create the sculptures that would be featured at Brookgreen Gardens. They commissioned pieces from artists like Daniel Chester French, who created the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., and Anna Hyatt Huntington herself created several sculptures that are still on display today.

The gardens officially opened to the public in 1932 and quickly became a popular destination for visitors. People were drawn to the sculptures' beauty and the gardens' natural beauty. The Huntingtons continued to work on the gardens until their deaths, leaving behind a truly incredible legacy.

Today, Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and is open to visitors year-round. It's a place where you can stroll through the gardens and admire the sculptures or take a guided tour and learn more about the history of the gardens and the Huntingtons. It's a place that truly has something for everyone, and it's a must-see for anyone visiting South Carolina.
